WKU News

• WKU Forensics Team wins state championship for 27th straight year: The WKU Forensics Team won the 2019 Kentucky Forensic Association State Tournament on Saturday (Feb. 9) in Louisville. WKU won the debate team sweepstakes, the individual events team sweepstakes and the overall combined team sweepstakes. Of the 16 event championships at the state tournament, WKU students won 14. This is WKU’s 27th consecutive year as state champion.
• 22 students candidates for WKU's 2019 Coming Home King: Twenty-two WKU students are vying for the 2019 Coming Home King. The king will be crowned Saturday (Feb. 16) during halftime of Hilltopper Basketball’s game versus UAB. Tipoff is 2 p.m. at Diddle Arena.
• Winter Super Saturdays: Check out photos from Week 2 of Winter Super Saturdays, hosted by The Center for Gifted Studies.
• WKU Public Radio Weekday Newscast Schedule: Tune into WKU Public Radio for national and international news from NPR, and local newscasts every half hour during Morning Edition (4-9 a.m. Central), and All Things Considered (3-6 p.m. Central), as well as local news features and interviews produced by the WKU news staff. • College Heights Herald to host WKU Housing Fair on Feb. 26: Finding the right place to live is among the confusing choices college students face each year. On Feb. 26, the College Heights Herald will bring WKU students a new level of access to the best information when the Herald hosts the first WKU Housing Fair throughout Downing Student Union.
• Improving University Student & Community Engagement: Lessons Learned from Bingocize®: WKU is pleased to host the second annual HIPs in the States National Conference, an informal community of college and university educators working with the National Association of System Heads and Taking Success to Scale (TS3) to improve the definitions, tracking, and assessments of high-impact educational practices at public institutions. Dr. Jason Crandall and Dr. Jean Neils-Strunja will be presenting along with graduate assistants Spencer Otto and Gigi Lemberg. The conference will run from Feb. 20-22 in the Downing Student Union.

• Men’s golf: Tops Shoot Best 36-Hole Team Score in 14 Years in Mobile: WKU senior golfer Stuart Easton picked up Monday where he left off in the fall, finishing the first day of South Alabama's Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate tied for third individually. That set the tone for the Hilltoppers' best 36-hole showing in 14 years. The final round begins this morning.
• Volleyball: WKU Celebrates 2018 Season with Awards Banquet: WKU Volleyball celebrated another season this past Friday as the Lady Toppers held their annual postseason awards banquet inside the Jack and Jackie Harbaugh Stadium Club. With 24-year veteran head coach Travis Hudson serving as the master of ceremonies, several awards were handed out to commemorate the successes of the 2018 campaign.
• Men’s basketball: Bassey Named C-USA Freshman of the Week for Seventh Time: After averaging a double-double for the third straight week, WKU center Charles Bassey claimed his seventh Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week award Monday. This is the third straight weekly freshman accolade for the 6-foot-11, 245-pound native of Lagos, Nigeria. Bassey averaged 14 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game in two road victories for WKU last week. Next: WKU vs. MTSU at 7 p.m. Thursday.
• Baseball: Countdown to First Pitch - 100 Days of Hilltopper History: As WKU prepares for the 100th Season of Hilltopper Baseball, WKU Athletics is treating fans to unique moments and interesting history from Hilltopper Baseball, leading up to First Pitch at Nick Denes Field on February 15.

• Remembering the National Corvette Museum sinkhole: Today marks five years since the National Corvette Museum sinkhole swallowed eight classic cars. Dr. Leslie North, Associate Professor of Geography at WKU, says it wasn't what she expected. "When we first arrived the interpretation was that it was just a sinkhole, and that didn't have a cave passage that extended beyond the hole that we could physically see," said North.

• #HeartsontheHill: Love letters put the stamp of approval on their relationship: It was May of 1971 on the Hill where Stella (Bradley) lived in South Hall and worked as a counselor. Fred Pool was an art student. One day, he and a friend came into the lobby while Stella was on duty, and she instantly fell for Fred’s smile. A few days later, they had their first date and then Fred moved back to his hometown in Virginia for summer break. To help seal their new-found relationship, the two wrote letters to one another until they reunited that fall on the Hill.
