For one week every summer, the Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) at WKU gathers Advanced Placement (AP) teachers from across the country on WKU’s campus to learn content, strategies, and pedagogy in an environment that fosters professional development and networking. Hosted by The Center for Gifted Studies, this year’s workshop runs from June 24 – 28 and has over 400 participants from states across the country.

Administered by the College Board, AP classes offer college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. Students who achieve high test scores can earn college course credit.

The APSI consultants offer insights into changes to AP, new educational resources and unit guides, and AP question banks. Teachers are able to draw upon these consultants’ insights into how AP tests are prepared and scored and pass that information along to their students.

The APSI at WKU is the longest-running AP Institute in Kentucky and has been offered continually since 1984. This summer, it offers 26 workshops for beginning and experienced teachers in everything from biology to world history.

In addition, there is also a two-part AP Coordinator Workshop that takes place Wednesday, June 26. This full-day workshop helps AP coordinators learn how to efficiently and successfully manage their schools’ AP program. Participants will have the change to exchange best practices and learn new ways to handle the responsibilities of coordinating an AP program.
