Students from the WKU Young Male Leadership Academy participated in the summer camp hosted by the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences on the WKU campus June 19-21. During this three-day summer camp, students were exposed to team-building activities and a wide array of topics such as the teaching field, communication and leadership skills. Presenters included WKU faculty members, Bowling Green and Warren County K-12 teachers, and the 2019 Kentucky Elementary Teacher of the Year, Nyree Clayton Taylor.

Participants included Warren Central High School students Tayshaun Bibb, Jamale Barber, Rasean Carothers, Tré Pillow and Tobian Ragland; Bowling Green High School students Benjamin Meza, Kevin Murillo, Jacoby Nelson and Emerson Pocasangre; Greenwood High School students Javon Mitchell, Jaiden Voan, Dakota Ware and Carrigan Watson; Warren East High School students Yosthin Hicks, Memphas Hite and Bryaden Wardlow; and South Warren High School students Chidi Afam, Simeon Burton, Tayshaun Jones and Tomi Mustapha.

After the summer camp, 18 YMLA students, representing the five local high schools, attended the Educators Rising National Conference June 22-25 in Dallas, Texas. Five students competed in the categories of Ethical Dilemma (South Warren High School students Tomi Mustapha, Chidi Afam, Tayshaun Jones and Simeon Burton) and Exploring Support Services Careers (Greenwood High School student Carrigan Watson). All students had the opportunity to learn from professionals across the country during the workshops and plenary sessions. 

The WKU Young Male Leadership Academy is a college preparation and recruitment initiative, which develops leadership skills in young males of diverse backgrounds by exploring the teaching profession. This program has been possible thanks to the partnership with Warren County Schools, Bowling Green Independent Schools and Western Kentucky University.
