Finance professor and Director of the WKU Center for Financial Success Mr. Andrew Head has been appointed to the Kentucky Financial Empowerment Commission (KFEC) Aging Kentuckians working group, developed within the Kentucky State Treasurer’s Office. This group will work to equip retired Kentuckians with the financial literacy resources needed to improve their financial livelihoods. Mr. Head and the group will advise the KFEC on how to achieve its objectives in this specific area.
“Kentucky consistently ranks near the bottom of various reports gauging financial acumen and money management habits,” Head said. “A person’s financial situation affects just about every aspect of their lives. I can think of no better way in which to empower Kentuckians to control their own destinies than by increasing their level of personal financial knowledge.”
The KFEC has established goals to assist six communities with its financial literacy: Aging Kentuckians, K-12 Students, Kentuckians with Disabilities, Low-Income Kentuckians, Veterans and Military Personnel, and State Government Employees. A partnership between the Treasurer’s Office and Kentucky credit unions will allow the Commission to operate as a 501c3 without using taxpayer dollars.
Mr. Head worked last year on the Financial Literacy Standards Revision and Writing Committee that developed the education initiative requiring all high schools students to meet a set of financial literacy standards before graduation.
"My decision to pursue a career in higher education was strongly influenced by a desire to assist with initiatives exactly like the Kentucky Financial Empowerment Commission," Head said.
