WKU Students Compete at Model UN Competition
- Wednesday, December 11th, 2019
WKU sent a delegation of 21 students to participate in the American Model United Nations simulation in Chicago from November 23-26. This simulation involved students from over 100 colleges and universities from across the United States and overseas working on current international problems and issues under discussion in the General Assembly, Security Council, the International Court of Justice and other UN committees. During this year's session, WKU represented China where our students tackled topics such as counter-terrorism, the rights of indigenous peoples, sustainable energy and cybersecurity. This simulation requires students to research the topics, write position papers and draft resolutions, and engage in public speaking and diplomacy to build support (or opposition) for particular positions. One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the simulation is to remain in character. The WKU delegation participated as if they were the diplomatic representatives of China, bringing a new awareness and sensitivity to different political, cultural and economic viewpoints. While the entire delegation did an outstanding job at the conference, Isaac Keller and Olivia Nisbet earned special recognition by being voted by their fellow delegates as the Outstanding Delegation for the General Assembly Second Committee. On his experience, Issac Keller says, “I would encourage all students to attend the conference in future years. The experience and knowledge you acquire is irreplaceable. The conference allows you to practice the art of negotiation and public speaking, all while learning about different countries and their policy positions. I am grateful I had the opportunity to attend this year and hope to head back to Chicago next year!”
