- Thursday, February 13th, 2020
Bowling Green, KY-Five WKU Chinese Flagship students have recently returned from their Capstone Year in China, receiving certification of their language proficiency by The Language Flagship, which is a federally-funded effort, and a component of the National Security Education Program at the U.S. Department of Defense.
To receive a Certification of Completion, students must participate in all parts of the domestic and international components of the Chinese Flagship Program, including a Capstone Year of language study and a professional internship in China or Taiwan.
Students who complete the above and reach the superior, or professional, level of proficiency in speaking Chinese, and have at least an advanced-plus level of proficiency in reading and listening, become Certified Global Professionals. If a student reaches the superior level of professional fluency in all language modalities, they become Certified Global Professionals with Distinction. This year, students at WKU were recognized at all three levels.
Flagship Certified Global Professionals are highly motivated graduates equipped with language proficiency and intercultural insights for careers in federal government, global business, nongovernmental organizations, natural sciences, performing arts, and other fields.
Dalton Harshbarger, of Burlington, KY, received a Certificate of Completion. Harshbarger has accepted a position with General Electric Aviation Engines Sourcing Rotational Program in Evendale, OH.
