Members of the WKU Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter will be spending their spring break in Decatur, Alabama.

The WKU group will be working March 8-14 on projects with the Morgan County Habitat for Humanity Affiliate as part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Collegiate Challenge Program.

The program, which is over 30 years old, allows students  the opportunity to give back during their breaks from school. This type of trip builds not only homes, but stability and strength within a community by providing simple decent affordable housing to those in need. For those who have chosen to participate by helping people they have never met, they will learn about building houses as well as about building themselves as they work in conjunction with others in a safe and guided fashion. Collegiate Challenge reports that one week can change a life, in addition to the people the participants are serving the life that is changed many times is the lives of the volunteers in the activity.

Participants in the trip include chapter advisor Bryan Reaka, faculty member in WKU’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; trip leader Ivy Kadisak of Carol Stream, Illinois, a sophomore Sociology major; Mia Sword of Lexington, a sophomore Data Analytics major; Keilen Frazier, a freshman Photojournalism and Public Relations major from Louisville; Kayla Austin, a sophomore Elementary Education major from Utica; Alex Miller, a sophomore Mechanical Engineering major from Bowling Green; Kathleen Johnson, a senior Biology major from Stillwater, Minnesota; Emerson Wells, a sophomore Business Economics major from Louisville; and Riley Greif, a junior Broadcasting major from Louisville. Michaela Guice of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Michael Williams of Cynthiana, staff members from St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Campus Center, also will be working with the group during the week.
