WKU has received the 2020 “Making Opportunities for Mothers in Academia” award from the International Association of Maternal Action and Scholarship.
The award recognizes WKU for its paid parental leave policy, an effort led by Lauren McClain, associate professor of Sociology and chair of the Faculty Senate’s Faculty Welfare Committee.
“I am so excited that WKU is being recognized for initiating a policy that is so meaningful for families. This policy will help faculty and staff to bond with their child and adjust to their new family lives while continuing to be productive employees upon their return. We are the first university in the state with this policy and hopefully this recognition will encourage other state universities to offer similar benefits at their institutions,” Dr. McClain said.
In announcing the award, IAMAS Executive Director Katie B. Garner told Dr. McClain that WKU’s application was the most noteworthy.
“The steering committee was most impressed with your ability to lead Western Kentucky University on initiatives that will make a significant impact on the lives and careers of mothers,” Dr. Garner said.
The award will be presented at the group’s annual conference in October.
