“I have learned not to take life for granted because tomorrow is not always promised,” said Dezaray Belanger, a nursing major from Cleveland, Ohio. Belanger graduated high school with an emergency medical technician (EMT) certification along with dispatching certifications. She spends her breaks, including the summer 2020 break, working as an EMT.

“I knew I wanted to make a difference and be active in the medical field,” Belanger said. “I want my patients to feel safe and secure with me.”

As an EMT, Belanger performs inter-facility transports from small hospitals to larger hospitals when needed. In addition, she travels to residences and nursing homes to provide emergency care.

When reflecting on her experience in the EMT position, Belanger acknowledged that she gains valuable medical knowledge from professionals in the field. She continues to learn how to interact with patients and medical personnel in different situations and understands that will benefit her in her future career.

“I’m proud to say that if it weren’t for the help of more experienced EMTs and paramedics, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m proud of my company and all of the work we do to give patients the best of care in their most vulnerable states.” 

At WKU, Belanger participates in WKU HOLAS and Chi Alpha campus ministry. She also serves as a desk assistant for WKU Housing and Residence Life.
