Spanish Women Authors of Serial Crime Fiction: Repeat Offenders in the 21st Century
- Monday, October 12th, 2020
Dr. Inma Pertusa and Dr. Melissa Stewart’s edited volume, Spanish Women Authors of Serial Crime Fiction: Repeat Offenders in the 21st Century, has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. The collection analyzes the authors’ treatment of current social, political and economic problems in Spain and beyond and explores the interrelations between gender, globalization, the environment and technology in very recent detective series featuring female investigators. The studies, written by some of the leading scholars on the field, highlight the strategies that allow the authors to break with the long-standing conventions, developing crime fiction in unexpected ways, including elements of science fiction, the supernatural, and the historical novel, as well as varied geographical settings (small towns, provincial cities, rural communities) beyond the urban environment.
Dr. Pertusa and Dr. Stewart have published numerous journal articles and participated in conference panels on this topic, in addition to interviewing several of the authors included. Dr. Pertusa has developed a course on Spanish female detection and film, which she will be offering on the KIIS Spain II Program in Segovia this summer. In the past, students in this course have written their own detective story and talked with authors about their novels. Dr. Stewart has translated two stories by Spanish crime fiction writer Susana Martín Gijón, “Operation Mantra” and “For once” https://fortnightlyreview.co.uk/2020/09/once/
