James Philip "JP" Stovall (MHC '14) of Owensboro, KY has been busy in Shanghai working in business consulting and supply chain managment. When he's not doing that, he's playing music and performing at open mics and jam nights at local venues around Shanghai and South Korea.
While a student in the Honors College, JP completed majors in Spanish Language and Culture; International Affairs; and Asian Religions & Cultures, along with a minor in Latin American Politics & Economics. He was also part of the Chinese Language Flagship program. He was actively involved in language and music related activites - tutoring Spanish and Chinese, teaching English classes to the local Hispanic community, and performing with the men's a capella group, Redshirts. He also spent time playing ultimate frisbee and doing martial arts.
He says his favorite memory of the Honors College is the faculty, "In particular the Office of Scholar Development was amazing. They opened my eyes to just how many resources were out there to help me do all of the things I wanted to do, and took painstaking one-on-one time to work with, coach me, and essentially figure out what my life plan was going to be when I didn’t even know the extent of what was really possible."
JP received 2 Critical Language Scholarships and a Boren Scholarship. He also studied abroad 5 times in China, including his Chinese Flagship Capstone year, and 3 times in Latin America.
The advice he gives to Honors students is, "Make your own path. Work closely with your advisors, mine were strong advocates on my behalf and worked together in cases to help me plot out the steps to making all the moving parts of my academic load come together."
