UPDATE: Due to the continued serious flooding across many parts of central and eastern Kentucky, the NWS offices serving the Commonwealth, and Kentucky Emergency Management Agency (KYEM), have agreed to POSTPONE the Statewide Tornado Drill.
WKU will participate in the statewide tornado safety drill Wednesday (March 3). At approximately 9:07 a.m. (Central time), WKU will test its emergency communications network, including the outdoor warning speakers and emergency text messaging system.
This is an informational drill only and WKU will maintain normal activities during this test.
As part of 2021 Severe Weather Awareness Week, the statewide tornado drill is conducted in partnership with the National Weather Service (NWS), Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM), Kentucky Weather Preparedness Committee and Kentucky Broadcasters Association. Across Kentucky, outdoor warning sirens will sound, weather alert radios will activate and television and radio stations will broadcast the alert, along with mobile devices.
Members of the WKU community are encouraged to use this drill as an opportunity to learn where to seek shelter on campus. Students, faculty and staff also can confirm enrollment in the emergency text system through TopNet.
Information on severe weather, tornado preparedness and how to sign up for WKU text alerts is available on the WKU Emergency Preparedness page and on the WKU Emergency and Weather-Related Communications page.
