On Wednesday, Mar. 24, WKU hosted a Virtual Liberal Arts Job Fair for graduating and graduate students. Area recruiters and employers attended the event, which was organized and held within Handshake job posting application. Once students registered through the Handshake app, they could choose which employers they wanted to engage with and could then decide if they wanted at attend a general informative group session or a personal one-on-one with the recruiter. Several, if not all, of the companies and organizations at the fair provided job prospects for English majors.

One of the employers present was Kentucky Educational Television.  KET, a member station of PBS, offers college graduates an array of job and internship opportunities in the fields of public affairs, television production, and editorial work.

Another opportunity offered to students was a year-long partnership with City Year. City Year places applicants into one of 29 cities to serve and assist a specific school district and its students. Alli Knox, the Detroit Regional Recruitment Manager said the program can help graduate students “develop a lot of different soft and hard skills that employers love to see such as communication, collaboration, teamwork, [and] leadership, [which] is going to be a huge one.” There are a lot of exciting opportunities and work involved with this job, which is based in justice for educational disparity and the prioritization of young students.

Teach for America was another employer at the fair, and Recruitment Associate Destynne Bingham said the organization’s main goal is to eradicate low graduation rates among low-income communities. “We believe these kids could have the best teachers in the world and they'd still go home to food deserts, lack of access to health care, and all of these [other] systemic issues. So that's why we look for leaders that are not necessarily education majors —and we look for folks who want to stay in the classroom, or lead out of a classroom [too].”

Other employers present at the Liberal Arts Job Fair were the FBI, the Peace Corp, WKU’s Graduate School and other broadcasting stations like Gray Television Group and Hearst Television. A major in English can provide the skills necessary to achieve in any of these professional fields, and you can check out each one’s individual website for more information on available positions.
