Research Writing

Citing Sources

Citing sources is an important piece of any research paper. When you cite appropriately, you are:

  • Avoiding the risk of plagiarism
  • Giving credit to the author(s) of the work
  • Provides evidence of your research
  • Gives others the information they need, should they need to access the materials you used

How to Cite Sources

The specific method for citing sources depends upon the subject area of the class. For example, psychology utilizes American Psychological Association (APA) style. There are three major styles that you will often hear referenced: APA, MLA and Chicago. However, there are also several others, such as Oxford, ASA and CSE.

It's important to follow the citation style that your professor has requested. Style guides are available at libguides.wku.edu/stylewrite
