WKU Sisterhood Spotlight: Telia Butler ('12)
Hometown: Bowling Green, KY
Current City: Bowling Green, KY
When did you attend WKU? 2008-2012
What activities were you involved in as a student? Student Government Association, Mahurin Honors College, Talisman, College Heights Herald, and the Phi Alpha Theta History Society.
Do you have a favorite memory from the Hill? This is going to sound simple, but going to class in Cherry Hall was one of my favorite things. I double majored in History and News/Editorial Journalism, and sitting in a 1930s building listening to lectures of Ancient Greece, the Middle Ages, and so much more just felt special. There’s a historic feel in those hallways. With a time capsule buried under the statue of the university’s first President on its front plaza, how can you not feel a presence there, with Henry Hardin Cherry guiding the way?
If you work, what do you do? I’m the first ever Downtown Development Coordinator for the City of Bowling Green. I’m also an independent reporter and the producer of the Throwback Thursday segment for WNKY TV for over 7 years.
Tell us about your family: I’m a product of teachers, bus drivers, and farmers. My mom and my husband are WKU alumni. He and I have a 19-pound adorable long-haired tuxedo cat named Luna. We live on my family’s cattle farm near my parents and Granddaddy.
Do you have any passion projects, other than WKU Sisterhood? I serve our Southern Ky Hospitality Association as its Secretary for the Board of Directors. I’m also serving out my Past Presidency on the American Marketing Association of BG’s Board. I love Duncan Hines Days and was part of the weeklong revival of that celebration last year of the man behind the cake mix. I need to complete my Daughters of the American Revolution application. I’m an Elm Street Society member and have an appreciation for the arts. I am a Leadership BG alumna, and I am currently co-chairing its Media & Arts Day for the second year in a row.
Fun fact about yourself: I’d rather be listening to The Monkees, watching Michael Landon on Bonanza or an Elvis movie. I wish I was the Professor, but I’m more of a Mr. Howell. Once upon a time, I was on the original Jumpin’ Jaguar jump rope team.
