Experience the wonders of Heaven and Earth! The faculty of WKU's Physics and Astronomy Department offer the public an opportunity to observe the heavens through the telescopes on the roof of TCCW and participate in fun physics demonstrations and activities using highly specialized equipment as well as materials you can find in your own home.

Meet in the lobby of TCCW (next to Hardin Planetarium). Activities are suitable for all ages, children 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult. This event is free of charge.

Program Highlights

Aided by WKU's Hilltoppers Astronomy Club, participants will be able to use the 12" rooftop telescope and several 4" telescopes to view objects such as asteroids, comets, planets and their moons, stars with extra-solar planets, star clusters in the Milky Way, giant gas clouds where new stars are being born, the spectacular Perseid meteor shower and many other celestial wonders.

With the support of WKU's Society of Physics Students, some of the physics activities which participants may be involved in include both indoor and outdoor demonstrations and hands on projects such as making bottle rockets, green energy and wind power, magic tricks with electricity and magnetism, lasers, sound waves and many other amazing aspects of the world around us.

WKU’s Department of Engineering will conduct the 12th annual Kentucky Bluegrass Robotics Competition on Oct. 22.

The competition is the department’s primary high school outreach effort and provides students with a challenging engineering design experience and teachers with guidance in teaching engineering topics.

A record 20 teams from 17 schools have signed up for the competition at WKU’s Engineering and Biological Sciences building. The contest will begin at 9 a.m.

Teams build a robot using construction materials provided by WKU; the robots must be able to pick up and move a variety of objects in a series of competitions with other teams’ robots.

Engineering faculty member Kevin Schmaltz is coordinating the department’s efforts, with faculty and staff members Robert Choate, Julie Ellis, Chris Moore, Shane Palmquist, Ron Rizzo and Stacy Wilson providing major support for this effort.  In addition, more than 100 current WKU engineering students support the set up and execution of the event during the fall semester, including the Electrical Engineering student section of IEEE.

When and Where? October 27, 2010, 1 to 4 p.m.  WKU Preston Center,  WKU Bowling Green Campus,  Bowling Green, KY 

Who's coming to the Expo? Businesses, government agencies, and school systems seeking staff for their own organizations, employment/staffing agencies, organizations providing a product or service distributorships, and representatives from graduate and professional schools.

Who's looking for what? Recruiters may be looking for part-time, co-op/intern, summer, and permanent employees or potential graduate students. The Expo is also a great time to explore and discuss career options with recruiters. They may be able to provide you with suggestions about classes to take to make you more marketable upon graduation.

What should I bring? Bring your WKU ID for event entry, and if you're job hunting, bring ample copies of your current resume to provide to recruiters. If you need resume help, contact Career Services for assistance or view resume information at the CSC website by clicking here.

Dress? Image isn't everything but it's a lot. Business professional or business casual attire is best. (Business suits, slacks with shirt and tie, pant or skirt outfits, dresses).

Will I get an interview? Generally, the Expo provides an initial contact with an organization. Formal interviews may be scheduled at a later date.

What else should I know?

Remember, bring your WKU ID for quicker event entry, have it out and ready to scan to get into the event.

Come during the early hours of the event
, it will give you more time. Some recruiters have to leave early.

Research the employers ahead of time if possible - that impresses the recruiters and helps you be prepared to talk with them about your "match" for their company. Links will be available to company websites from this page in September.

Relax and enjoy the moment. Recruiters are here to meet YOU. No need to be "up tight", but do be professional.

Follow up with organizations that interest you. Ask for the recruiters' business cards. Send a thank you note within a week of the event and request a follow up interview.
