Residential Counselors and Tutor Counselors must be currently enrolled in college. WKU Upward Bound accepts applicants from any regionally-accredited college or university.

Summer Residential Counselor:
Looking for a fun summer job? Want to make an impact on the lives of deserving students? Join WKU Upward Bound as a Summer Residential Counselor. Residential counselors serve as mentors, residential advisors, tutors, and camp counselors to first-generation and low-income high school participants in a residential setting.
Primary Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of a Residential Counselor is to ensure the safety and well-being of students. Residential Counselors live in a residence hall and supervise approximately 45 high school students who are participating in a six-week academic program. For summer 2024, the residential component dates are scheduled for June 2-July 19th. Residential Counselors also serve as mentors and tutors for participants, inspiring them to aspire to pursue higher education. In addition, RCs help lead program activities (games, crafts, social/cultural activities, etc.)
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Monitor afternoon study hall and tutor students in areas of academic expertise
- Work with professional staff to monitor and evaluate students’ academic and social progress
- Lead a team of 6-8 students in team competitions
- Transport students to and from activities in program vehicles
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in college
- Must have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher
- Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record
- Must be able to work nights and some weekends
- Must be mature and have excellent professional judgment
Compensation:
- Free private room for the duration of the residential program
- Weekday meals and all fees to activities are provided during the residential program
- Paid training
- $12 per hour for 37 ½ hours per week
Tentative Dates of employment: June 1-3 (training); June 5-July 19 (residential program & trip); July 13 (wrap up-staff only)

2024-2025 TUTOR COUNSELOR (ACADEMIC YEAR)
What is Upward Bound? Upward Bound (UB) is a college access program designed to prepare low-income/potential first-generation students for success in college. UB provides assistance with high school course selection, study skills, tutoring, ACT preparation, college and career information, and financial aid assistance.
Description of Position: Upward Bound is seeking applications for tutors for one or more of the following subject areas: English Composition, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, History/Social Studies, Mathematics, Spanish, and ACT Prep. Tutor Counselors will work closely with program staff to support the academic development of Upward Bound program participants in grades 9-12.
Work Schedule: Weekday afternoons (via Zoom); one Saturday morning per month.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Tutor students in areas of academic expertise.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on students’ academic progress.
- Provide assistance reviewing class material and supporting test preparation.
- Motivate students to aspire to pursue higher education.
- Maintain professional relationships with students.
Additional Responsibilities:
- General office duties (filing, data entry, assisting with mailings, office organization, social media updates, etc.)
- Participate incultural and social program activities (teambuilding, field trips, college tours), as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must have a cumulative 2.75 GPA or higher.
- Must have demonstrated competency in one (or more) of the following areas: English Composition, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, History/Social Studies, Mathematics, or Spanish.
- Must have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Must be mature and have excellent professional judgment.
Compensation:
- $10 per hour
