WKU Coverage End Date:

Last day of the month of separation.

Continuation, Portability or Conversion Options of Existing Coverage:

  • COBRA continuation coverage – Generally lasts for 18 months but may be extended up to 36 months in certain circumstances. WKU’s third-party administrator, Employers Risk Services (ERS), will send a notification letter to employees after separation. See COBRA rates.

Possible Post Separation Insurance Options:

  • Spouse’s employer-based coverage. If your spouse/partner is enrolled in a different employer’s group health plan, he/she has up to 30 days from the date of the qualifying event – that results in the loss of coverage – to add you to his/her coverage.
  • KERS/TRS
  • Health Insurance Marketplace – Losing job-based coverage qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). This means you can enroll in a health plan outside of Open Enrollment (Nov.1 – Dec. 15). You can apply to the Marketplace with a SEP any time from 60 days before and 60 days after your separation date.
  • Medicare (if eligible)
  • Individual policy through an insurance Broker or Agent

Note: All plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace include vision coverage for children. Only some plans include vision coverage for adults. To shop for stand-alone vision plans, contact an insurance agent or broker.
