See Dr. Gitiata Nasreen, Fullbright Scholar (Howard University), speak on Whitewashing the Color Politics: The "Unfair" Construction of Beauty for the (Market) Beast.

A fixed definition of beauty tied to pale skin has been reinforced and perpetuated globally by the expanding cosmetics industry and omnipresent commercials. A 2011 report of the World Health Organization reveals that women (and some men) of quite a few countries of the world use fairnedd products on a regular basis.

Dr. Nasreen will explore different dimenstions involed in skin-whitening product commercials. Based on textual analysis of relevant TV commercials, secondary data, and the author's experience of campaigning against whiteness products in Bangladesh, this presentation reveals the complexities of ad marratives in a globalized cultural context.

Presented by the Institute for Citizenship & Social Responsibility. Reception to Follow.

A swipe-able event.
