The PCAL Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee and the Africana studies program presents documentary filmmaker, photojournalist, and author St. Clair Detrick-Jules, who will give a talk on "Black Hair + Storytelling as a Form of Social Activism." She will be discussing her journey photographing and interviewing Black women with natural hair for her recent photojournalism book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood, a large-scale visual anthropology exploring the deep, complex relationships across generations between Black women and their hair. She will also discuss how hair can be used as an entry point into related topics, such as self-love, anti-Blackness, healing from racial trauma, feminism, and community relationships, and offer a blueprint for using storytelling as a form of social activism.

The presentation is open to everyone, and will be held in the Gary Ransdell Hall auditorium (room 1074). We hope you can join us! Finding the First Farmers  with Kentucky Archaeological Survey staff and guest curators: Dr. David Pollack, and Dr. A. Gwynn Henderson.Panelists from the Kentucky Archaeological Survey (KAS) will discuss the diverse nature of indigenous farm life in the Barren River drainage of south-central Kentucky during the Mississippian era. Exploring recent archaeological finds, the team will expand on the First Farmers of the Barren River Valley exhibition at the Kentucky Museum to address misconceptions on indigenous peoples’ identity, technology, settlement patterns, foodways, and trade routes to reveal the complex societies present before Europeans arrived in what is now North America. They will also explore the similarities between indigenous farmers and Kentucky farm families of the late nineteenth to early twenty-first centuries.

You are cordially invited to the Third Annual Data Science Day on Thursday, April 11, sponsored by the WKU Applied Center for Data Science and the Applied Research Technology Program.  There will be a plenary talk delivered by Dr. Mahdi Yazdanpour of Northern Kentucky University from 4:15-5:15 PM in Ogden College Auditorium room 1006.  Dr. Yazdanpour will talk about how the human brain can directly interface with electromechanical devices through the use of deep-learning algorithms.

There wlll also be industrial and student presentations from 1:40-4:00 PM in Snell Hall room 1102.  Presenters from industry and government are Beth Rogers, a Senior Manager of Data Science at Bath & Body Works; JC Watkins from the Kentucky APEX Accelerator and the Kentucky Science & Technology Corporation; Data4All Podcaster Charlie Yielding; and WKU alum Cameron White, Dollar General Corp.  Beth Rogers will describe her career path which includes moving from a top marine biology lab to a brain imaging research center to a cave research program to a leader in corporate industry.  JC Watkins will present on post-graduation opportunities for data scientists across various industries, the federal government and with firms that service departments of the government.  Charlie Yielding will talk about helping companies operationalize with AI.  Cameron White will talk about what experienced data scientists do if their data set is not large and comprehensive or there is too much data.

The students presentations are by graduate students Nima Esmaeilzadeh and Shake Ibna Abir, Gatton Academy students Luna Asbell and Katie Isaacs, and undergraduates Jack Galloway and Cheyla Ferguson.  Galloway and Ferguson are supported on Undergraduate Student in Data Science grants from the Applied Center for Data Science.

Western Kentucky University is holding its second undergraduate philosophy conference on Friday, April 12th, 2024. The conference's keynote speaker is Professor Corey Reed (Butler University), whose talk is titled "Controlling Images: Black Existentialism as the Political Negotiations between the World, the Self, and Racialized Imagery".

The deadline for submitting papers is February 4th, 2024. Students currently enrolled (or who will be enrolled during the spring 2024 semester) at any institution of higher education (community college, college, university) are eligible to submit a paper for the event. To submit a paper, please enclose an anonymized paper with an abstract and title, together with an cover sheet that includes your institution.

Please keep papers to a length suitable for reading and/or presenting in 30 minutes (i.e. no more than 5,000 words). Speakers will also have a Q&A of 15-to-20 minutes (depending on the conference schedule).

The review process is as follows: papers will be reviewed by fellow students who are officers of the WKU Philosophy Club, who will then decide which papers to accept.

The conference venue will be in Cherry Hall (Room TBA). Cherry Hall is an accessible building. At present we are unable to offer funding for travel and lodging, but we strongly encourage you to seek funding through your department, college, undergraduate student government, and other available resources. Lunch or dinner will be provided to presenters.

Milan Rericha is a professor at Musikhochschule in Lugano, Switzerland and guest professor at Janacek Academy of performing arts in Brno. He has led master classes in Dresden (Musikhochschule C. M. Weber), Milano (Conservatorio di G. Verdi), Enschede and Amsterdam (Royal Music Academy), JAMU in Brno, in Prague Conservatory and Conservatory Teplice as well as in other places in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, China, USA, Mexico, Italy, Slovenia and Spain, Russia (Gnessin Special Moscow School of Music), Ukraine (Central Music School in Kiyv), Kazakhstan (Kazakh National Conservatoire), Hanoi (Viet Nam National Academy of Music), Hungary (Ferenc Liszt Music Academy), Norway (Royal Music Academy in Oslo), Sweden (Royal College of Music).

Already in early youth he manifested himself as a major musical talent and drew attention to himself by winning the national competition for music schools. He graduated with honours from the Conservatoire in Teplice and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (S. Koutnik, J. Hlavac, V. Mares). He studied then at the International Academy of Contemporary Music at the Paris Conservatoire in the class of A. Damiens and P. Boulez as well as with prof. F. Benda as a fellow of the Swiss Government at the Academy of Music in Basel. He attended master classes of Milan Etlik, Michel Arignona (Conservatoire Briten in Perigeux in France) and Charles Neidich (Julliard School in New York). Milan Rericha recieved PhD under the guidance of prof. M. Polak at the Janacek Academy in Brno.

Milan Rericha is a prize winner of many national and international competitions such as Mozart Chamber Music Competition in Prague, Prix Mercure ORF in Vienna, Swiss Rides, International Music Competition BOG in Basel.

Hello Math Lovers!!

We’re going to celebrate the end of the Spring Semester with a Team Trivia Contest on Tuesday, April 23 at 5:30 P.M. in COHH 4123. 

We will randomly assign teams on site, so you can come alone or bring friends – just know that you may not end up on the same team!

The questions will not be Math questions, but just general trivia questions. It should be a fun time for all.

Dr. Robert Talisse, Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University, will give a keynote address entitled, "The Civic Value of Solitude". Dr. Talisse specializes in contemporary political philosophy, with particular interest in democratic theory and political epistemology. In addition, he pursues topics in pragmatism, analytic philosophy, argumentation theory, and ancient philosophy.
