Kentucky Climate Center Mission
The Kentucky Climate Center provides climate services, conducts climate research, and engages students in projects that build upon classroom learning, helping to prepare them for the workforce or pursuit of advanced degrees.
Under its umbrella, the Kentucky Climate Center is home to the State Climate Office of Kentucky, the Kentucky Mesonet at WKU, and the Climate Research Lab.
The Kentucky Climate Center also maintains an archive of historical climate data and documents in various forms. We also have access to online climate databases and can help find the information you need.
- 1978:
The Kentucky Climate Center is created through a memorandum of agreement among Western Kentucky University, the National Weather Service, and the National Climatic Data Center (now known as the National Centers for Environmental Information). The agreement re-established the position of State Climatologist for Kentucky that had been a federal position until 1973.
- 1998:
The Kentucky Climate Center becomes a founding member of the Applied Research and Technology Program of Distinction (ARTP) in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering at Western Kentucky University.
- 2002:
The Kentucky Climate Center is recognized as the State Climate Office of Kentucky by the American Association of State Climatologists as part of the National Climate Services Partnership.
- 2006:
The Kentucky Climate Center receives funding through the National Weather Service to begin develop of the Kentucky Mesonet at WKU.
- Storm Data - Monthly report on storms and unusual weather. Includes narrative, pictures, and impacts of selected events.
- Local Climatological Data - Monthly and annual summaries of temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, and wind speed for selected cities.
- Climatological Data - Monthly and annual summaries of daily temperatures and precipitation for an extensive network or stations. Also includes daily snowfall, snow depth, evaporation, and soil temperature data.
- Hourly Precipitation Data - Hourly precipitation data from a network of recording rain gages.
