- Global Learning & International Affairs
- Monday, October 18th, 2021
Dr. Michael Stokes led a summer 2018 Wildlife Conservation & Management in South Africa program.
Global Learning & International Affairs invites faculty to participate in future global teaching experiences. We welcome new proposals and ideas to continue to expand global learning opportunities for ALL WKU students.
Global teaching opportunities at WKU include:
WKU Faculty-Led Programs
WKU Faculty-Led Programs are a collaboration between GLIA, faculty members, their academic units and designed for WKU students. Developing and leading a faculty-led program internationally or within the U.S. can:
- Attract students to your major
- Contribute to student persistence and graduation
- Expand global learning opportunities for faculty & students
- Contribute to faculty professional development and research
Proposals are currently open for new programs in Winter or Spring 2023. The proposal deadline is November 15, 2021. Submit a proposal here.
WKU Virtual Global Learning Experiences
We are exploring virtual global learning with an eye to providing greater accessibility and integration of global learning across campus. Virtual global learning, also referred to as virtual exchange or Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) exists as experiences that are complementary to traditional student mobility programs and is focused on connecting faculty and students in different countries for collaborative projects and discussions.
Virtual global learning can look like:
- Co-curricular activities & events
- Virtual language exchange
- Short-term virtual exchange activities embedded into existing courses
- Semester long, globally networked courses
- Virtual and/or hybrid faculty-led programs
CCSA
The Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA) is a consortium of colleges and universities across the United States and hosted at WKU. CCSA organizes Summer and Winter faculty-led programs to primarily English-speaking countries abroad and locations within the United States.
Jerry Barnaby, Executive Director of CCSA, states that “CCSA offers a professional development resource for our member institutions and their faculty and staff. Faculty not only learn to create effective courses to be taught in a global learning format, they also learn to navigate and incorporate aspects that enable them to be more effective in their other courses. Global teaching and global learning are more than just the academic goals of each class. They are collective experiences shared among students, teachers, and on-site support that positively impacts each person on a CCSA program.”
More information on teaching with CCSA can be found here.
KIIS
The Kentucky Institute of International Studies (KIIS) is a consortium of colleges and universities in Kentucky and surrounding states. KIIS is headquartered at WKU and operates Summer, Winter and Semester programs all over the globe.
In the words of John Dizgun, Executive Director of KIIS, “Co-founded by WKU in the 1970’s, KIIS is a non-profit, faculty-led study abroad consortium of 25 colleges and universities. WKU Faculty from all academic disciplines have the opportunity to teach abroad on 20+ KIIS Summer & Winter programs (2-5 weeks in length) in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. KIIS promotes multi-cultural understanding and respect with hands-on, excursion-based learning, and provides faculty resources, support and experience to help them thrive abroad.”
More information on teaching with KIIS can be found here.
