WKU student Lillian Nellans of Des Moines, Iowa, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Foundation for Global Scholars to support study in the Peace and Conflict program at American University in Bosnia and Herzegovina this summer.
Nellans, the daughter of Jennifer and Bill Nellans, is completing coursework in peace and conflict studies while interning with the International Commission on Missing Persons in Sarajevo. A rising second-year student, she is pursuing degrees in International Affairs and Philosophy. Nellans is a member of WKU’s national champion forensics team and a student in the Honors College at WKU. Next semester she will be studying peace and conflict in Haifa, Israel.
Nellans said she plans “to continue researching ethnic and religious conflict during my next three years at WKU. I would like to look at issues of conflict in Bowling Green and around the world as I continue to take advantage of WKU’s expansive study abroad offerings.” She aspires to a career in human rights advocacy or policymaking.
The Foundation for Global Scholars (FGS) was established in 2006 to open doors for as many college students as possible to have international study opportunities and prepare them to tackle global challenges. The Foundation’s nationally competitive scholarships provide financial support to American undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to engage in study abroad.
The Office of Scholar Development at WKU assisted Nellans in identifying potential funding sources to support her work in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Office of Study Abroad and Global Learning helped her to find academic programs abroad that would help her achieve her long-term goals.
