Section 508 / Web Accessibility

The Department of Justice published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on July 20, 2023 explaining updates to the regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to add more specific requirements about web and mobile application accessibility. This rule mandate that all webpages intended for students, have to exceed accessibility and usability standards that have been set forth by both the state and federal government(s). To that end, Accessibility Best Practices provides resources, guidelines, and information to help campus main site contacts, developers, and designers with web accessibility compliance. Web authors are encouraged "to exceed minimum standards to enhance accessibility and usability for the entire University community."

In addition, The National Center on Disability Access to Education creates educational resources to increase universal access. Creating Accessible Electronic Content: the handout provides general recommendations for creating accessible content. For program-specific instructions (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat) see other cheatsheets.
