Foot Protection

At WKU, street shoes are not always enough foot protection on the job.  You may need protection from the following hazards:

• Falling or rolling objects
• Objects piercing the sole
• Electrical hazards
• Contact with harmful or corrosive substances
• Slippery or wet surfaces
• Heat or cold contact
• Stubbing or banging toes

Select footwear designed to protect against the hazards of the job. 

• Reinforced impact-resistant steel toes or footguards for falling objects
• Metal insoles or reinforced soles for punctures
• Metal-free if electrical shock is the hazard
• Rubber or neoprene for contact with hazardous chemicals
• Insulated or heat-resistant soles for cold or hot floors

Even when special protective footwear is not necessary, your everyday work shoes or boots should meet all the following criteria:

• Fit comfortably without slipping or pinching
• Made of leather, rubber, or strong synthetic material
• Provide good foot support
• Have low heels and non-skid soles for good traction
• Be in good conditions with no rips or holes
• Laces fastened securely

Always inspect and maintain work shoes in good condition.  Repair or replace footwear that cannot provide good protection.
