In politics, the old adage “having a seat at the table” is often used to refer to those in positions of power, influence and policy making. This poster exhibit highlights a few of the women who have held political office and had “a seat at the table” in decision making for the Commonwealth.

This exhibit tells the stories of freshmen year from participants in a student success intiative, WKU Freshmen Guided Pathway (FGP). This cohort of first-time, full-time students who graduated from one of five high schools in Warren County represent the typical WKU freshman in terms of academic achievement prior to admission and their demographic makeup.
FGP assists students as they negotiate the often difficult affective and academic shifts between high school and college. Learn more about the program in this exhibit, presented by the Kelly M. Burch Institute for Transformative Practices in Higher Education, Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing, the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, the WKU Center for Literacy, and the Kentucky Museum.

Gazing Deeply showcases how WKU’s backyard—the unique landscape of Mammoth Cave—is being studied, interpreted, and inspiring action on environmental change. Coinciding with the UNESCO Conservation of Fragile Karst Resources: A Workshop on Sustainability and Community and Earth Day’s 50th anniversary in 2020, this exhibition is a collaborative effort between arts and science faculty and students that highlights one of the most well-known and vital natural landscapes in the world.

This exhibit traces the history of Kentucky women in politics and political activism, featuring artifacts from the Rather-Westerman Collection and the America United/Divided project.

The 14th Annual LifeSkills Run for Autism, supporting the Suzanne Vitale Clinical Education Complex at WKU, will be a virtual event this year and will include a 4 Mile Run, a 1 Mile Kid's Run and a 1 Mile Fun Walk.
Participants may complete the events between April 5 and April 30. You may choose to use the original race route or use a route of your own. For the virtual 4 mile event, participants can choose to RUN, WALK, or BIKE the 4 miles. Registration for both the 4 Mile event and the 1 Mile Fun Walk is $30. The WKU Student Chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics will host a Virtual Q&A Session with Dr. Justin Webster, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Abstract: In this talk we describe, model, and analyze the phenomenon of aeroelastic flutter---that is, the way an elastic structure may become unstable in the presence of an adjacent flow of air. Under certain circumstances, a feedback instability occurs between elastic deformations and pressure changes in the airflow, resulting in sustained oscillations. A canonical example was seen in the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge, which collapsed in 1940 while fluttering in 40 mph winds. We note the important distinction between flutter, as we will discuss it, and the resonance phenomenon, due to the presence of a periodic external forcing.
Flutter is typically discussed in the context of aero-mechanical systems: buildings and bridges in wind, and flight systems. However, applications also arise in biology (snoring and sleep apnea), and in alternative energy technologies (piezoelectric energy harvesters). Through mathematical modeling (using differential equations) and subsequent analyses of these models, we try to capture the mechanism that gives rise to this type of instability. Additionally, when flutter occurs, we attempt to describe its qualitative features, as well as how to prevent it (or bring it about).
For this talk we assume calculus and some basic notions from physics, although some ideas from differential equations and linear algebra will be mentioned and explained.
