NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates, and similar programs host by the National Insititutes for Health and other funders, provide paid summer research internships at university research labs across the country. WKU students obtain and participate in summer research internship programs every year.

This event will focus on connecting undergraduate students in nearly all academic disciplines, including biomedical, STEM, and social science undergraduates, with these programs.

Moderated by Cory Dodds in the Office of Scholar Development, a panel of WKU faculty, who have previously managed an REU, will discuss the mentorship provided via research internship programs and the do's and don'ts of applying for these valuable opportunities.

Presentation by Dr. Nichols Hartlep, Associate Professor of Education Studies and Robert Charles Billings Endowed Chair in Education, Berea College. A leading authority on the model minority stereotype, Dr. Hartlep will untangle the model minority stereotype of Asian/Americans in a way that will illuminate three racist elements of the model minority myth's sophistry and discursive nature, and its reliance on dog whistle politics. This talk will draw from three of his previous books: The Model Minority Stereotype: Demystifying Asian American Success, The Model Minority Stereotype Reader: Critical and Challenging Readings for the 21st Century and Killing the Model Minority Stereotype: Asian American Counter Stories and Complicity.

The WKU Army ROTC program will host its 13th Eric D. Yates Memorial Run on Sept. 16. The 5K Run and 2-Mile Walk will begin at 9 a.m. at Chaney’s Dairy Barn, 9191 Nashville Road.

Yates, a 2008 WKU graduate from Rineyville, was killed in action Sept. 17, 2010, after an improvised explosive device detonated near his patrol in Afghanistan. Yates served in the Army’s 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell.

Proceeds from the event benefit the 1LT Eric Yates Scholarship Fund. Registration for the run/walk is $20 in advance at https://www.raceentry.com/races/13th-annual-eric-yates-memorial-5k-run-and-2-mile-walk/2023/register or $25 at the event. Advance registration includes an event T-shirt.

The Elephant 6 Recording Co. shares the unique inside story of the collective creative evolution behind the sounds of 1990s psychedelic rock bands like the Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and the Apples in Stereo--the founding groups behind the Elephant 6 collective, as well as a host of other artists--with inspirational resonance for today's music makers and music lovers everywhere.

WKU and WKU Athletics are set to unveil the state-of-the-art Soccer/Softball Complex in a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public.

The complex will serve as home to both the soccer and softball programs with dedicated locker rooms, coach's offices, training turf with batting cages, athletic training and nutrition space, and a team room/classroom.

The complex is located at 1777 Creason St., Bowling Green, KY 42101 and parking is available for those attending in the Creason Lot.

Tailgating activities begin at 2:30 p.m. with a performance by Steel Hill at 3:30 p.m. on South Lawn and Topper Walk on Avenue of Champions at 4:10 p.m. Members of WKU’s Class of 2027 will participate in the pregame Big Red Rush. Reminder for the campus community from Provost Robert “Bud” Fischer: Beginning at 2:30 p.m., we are asking offices to operate with minimal staff and encourage employees choosing to leave campus to do so quickly. This will help with parking and traffic as we transition to event operations in support of the game. Those choosing to leave will not be charged vacation time.

Emily Greenwood (BA '12) will talk about her career as a Lead Business Intelligence Analyst at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (and her former work at the FBI). She will highlight how studying mathematics at WKU has been beneficial to her in both her career and her further studies. This will be followed by a Q&A Session.
