The state requires applicants for counselor licensure to graduate from a master's program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). 

Applicants should be aware of these 2 provisions:

21 NCAC 53 .0206 Part C: Applicants applying on or after July 1, 2025, must complete all internship experiences in a clinical mental health setting that provides substantial opportunities for the assessment, appraisal, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders. These experiences must involve "direct counseling experience" as defined in Rule .0205(a). 

21 NCAC 53 .0212: Clinical supervision must be "face-to-face," meaning live, interactive, and visual. Synchronous video supervision is permitted if it involves real-time verbal and visual interaction. All supervision—whether live or through recorded sessions—must be conducted confidentially, following the ACA Code of Ethics (Rule .0102).

Additional requirements for state licensure may include background checks, official transcripts, fees, additional coursework, training, experience, and board examination results.
