About 40 teams of high school students will participate in the Zone 2 Regional Competition of the inaugural Lieutenant Governor’s Entrepreneurship Challenge April 11 at WKU’s Center for Research and Development.

Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton will attend the competition to welcome students and present awards to the winners. The top two finishers advance to the state competition on April 29.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Entrepreneurship Challenge (LGEC) is a tiered business pitch competition for Kentucky high school students grades 9-12 from public, private and home-school groups. The LGEC is intended to introduce students to a realistic competitive business environment, as well as promote business ownership and lifelong learning.

Teams of two to four students will have 10 minutes to pitch their business to a panel of judges, then the judges will have 10 minutes for a Q&A session with the student entrepreneurs.

The regional event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude with an awards ceremony at 2 p.m. The WKU Center for Research and Development is located at 2413 Nashville Road, Bowling Green.

“Small business is the backbone of the American economy,” Hampton said. “It is critical for students not only to learn about and experience entrepreneurship but also for them to see themselves as the next generation of small business owners.”

Zone 2 Regional Competition teams represent Assumption High School, Atherton High School, Barren County High School, Bullitt Central High School, Bullitt East High School, Campbellsville High School, Central High School Magnet Career Academy, Christian Academy of Louisville - English Station Campus, Cumberland County High School, DuPont Manual High School, Eastern High School, The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics & Science, GEO International High School, Green County High School, Greenwood High School, Hardin County Schools Early College & Career Center, Louisville Collegiate School, Marion County High School, Thomas Nelson High School, Sacred Heart Academy and home school groups.
