WKU’s Interfraternity Council hosted the seventh annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® event, the international men’s march to raise awareness for rape, sexual assault and gender violence, on April 4.
During the event, which was part of Sexual Assault Prevention Month activities at WKU, 72 male students signed on to walk a mile in high-heeled shoes around WKU’s campus to symbolize putting themselves in “her” shoes and taking a stance against gender violence. Proceeds benefited Hope Harbor Inc., a sexual trauma recovery center, in Bowling Green.
Counting registration and sponsorships, the event raised $2,500 for Hope Harbor.
The walk started at Centennial Mall, up Normal Street and around Cherry Hall, down Avenue of Champions concluding back in Centennial Mall with a celebration.
Juan Pinilla, IFC Activities Director, served as the emcee for the event, and Elizabeth Madariaga, a staff counselor at WKU’s Counseling & Testing Center, was a guest speaker.
