WKU Upward Bound student helps Kentucky team win regional academic competition

WKU Upward Bound participant Sylas Morris, a sophomore from Logan County High School, helped the Kentucky All-Star Scholar’s Bowl team to victory at the regional competition on April 8. The team remained undefeated during six rounds of quick-recall competition in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Kentucky All-Star Scholar’s Bowl team competed against state winners from Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The event was hosted by the Southeastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (SAEOPP) and Atlanta Metropolitan State College.
The Kentucky team is comprised of the top performing players from the state competition held at the annual TRIO Day in February. The other team members are: Jeremiah Bartlett, Morehead State University Upward Bound; Donovan James and Ricky Mullins, University of Pikeville Upward Bound; and Aaron Shaffer, Berea College Upward Bound.
Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program. UB is dedicated to identifying and serving students who are determined to succeed in postsecondary education. UB provides assistance with course selection, study skills, ACT preparation, college and career exploration, academic tutoring, and financial aid and financial literacy information. WKU UB serves students from Allen, Butler, Edmonson, Hart and Logan counties, and is free to all participants.
