During a visit on Wednesday (April 26), Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear awarded the WKU Student Government Association (SGA) $500 for winning the “viral award” in the “Voice of Justice” video contest. SGA will be matching the $500 to provide the WKU Counseling and Testing Center with $1,000 for resources aimed at preventing sexual assault and providing services for survivors of sexual assault.
SGA students, in partnership with Vid Monster Productions, produced the winning video, titled “Speak Up.” The video promotes active bystanding as a tool for preventing sexual assault. The contest, held by the Attorney General’s office, awarded the WKU video for receiving the most number of views.
Estimates from the Justice Department find one in five women experience some kind of sexual assault in college. The concept of active bystanding encourages students to speak up against the attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate this behavior.
