A Medical Review Officer, (MRO) is a physician who has been trained and certified to evaluate drug testing results. Initial certification involves a 2-3 day class on the specific Federal requirements of drug testing and possible explanation for non-negative results. Additional education is given in industry and pre-employment drug screening.

After completion of the classroom education, a certification exam is given. Dr. Blewett achieved initial certification in 2001 and re-certified in 2006. She will re-certify by examination in 2011. However, as the Federal guideline and industry standards are always changing, she attended an up-date class in March 2009. New information was given in the need for observed collection in several situations for the Federally regulated (DOT) collection.

Additionally, newer techniques in hair and saliva testing were reviewed. Breath alcohol testing was also reviewed. In consideration of Kentucky's Drug Free Work Place initiative, WKU HS is ready to collect samples and evaluate the results. By the end of the semester all Health Services Clinical Staff should be trained in drug screen collection - Federal standard. Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) training will take place during the summer.
