The inaugural cohort of the WKU Staff Cultural Competence Certificate (WKUC3) embarked on a four-month exploration of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. WKUC3 is an initiative of the “One WKU” campaign, a professional development opportunity offered to all WKU staff. The certificate program fulfills the following interrelated functions: To introduce and/or deepen participants' knowledge of belonging and inclusion in higher education; To offer a collegial space for participants to reflect on their current thoughts and practices; and To become advocates for a more inclusive campus community.
Dr. Monica Burke, the Provost Fellow for Engagement & Opportunities, led this remarkable program. She envisioned a space where staff members could deepen their understanding of these critical topics and to develop advocates rather than experts. The long-term vision was to cultivate a mindset of continuous growth through praxis and reflection as a way to foster inclusive advocacy at WKU.
The 2023-24 cohort was selected from various departments. We are pleased to recognize the first graduates of the WKC3 program — Taryn Calloway, Audra Coil, Peggy Crowe, Egypt Cullom, Damien Duncan, Lindsey Houchin, Masami Matsuyuki, Trevor Polston, Charley Pride, Melanie Redden, Leah Shapiro, Jarrod Smith, and Tammy Spinks.
Dr. Burke provided a safe space where participants could reflect on their current practices, question assumptions, challenge biases, and explore new horizons. In this nurturing environment, they discovered that advocacy wasn’t about expertise; it was about growth. Each month, participants delved into topics like microaggressions, allyship, helping skills, group dynamics, and intersectionality. They grappled with uncomfortable truths, wrestled with biases, and emerged stronger.
As the inaugural cohort completes their journey, ONE WKU celebrates their commitment. These advocates—armed with knowledge, empathy, and a dash of courage—will continue their work beyond the certificate. But the story doesn’t end here because the next cohort opportunity awaits; could this be you?
