The WKU Statesmanship Academy is a leadership and civic engagement program developed by the Department of Political Science at Western Kentucky University. The primary goal of the Academy is to encourage civic engagement and promote a greater understanding and appreciation of all levels of government throughout Warren County public high schools.

What is the WKU Statesmanship Academy?
The WKU Statesmanship Academy is a leadership and civic engagement program developed by the Department of Political Science at Western Kentucky University. The primary goal of the Academy is to encourage civic engagement and promote a greater understanding and appreciation of all levels of government among future leaders in Warren County.
What is the purpose of the program?
The Academy aims to:
- Inspire students to become active, informed participants in civic life
- Expose students to public service and governance
- Connect academic learning to real-world leadership opportunities
Who is eligible to apply?
- High school juniors and seniors in Warren County are eligible.
- Individual schools may choose whether to open applications to juniors, seniors, or both.
- The goal is to include 6 to 8 students per school, with participation from both public and private schools, and the homeschool community.
Are there any costs to students?
The statemanship academy is free for students. The program is funded with a generous gift from WKU alumnus Glenn Jackson.
How does the application process work?
- Applications open: April 24, 2025
- Applications due: May 15, 2025
- Notifications sent: May 31, 2025
- Students will apply through a Google form. Application information can be found here and will be distributed by high school college and career readiness coaches.
What is the meeting schedule and format?
- The Academy will meet six times during the school year, usually on the third Wednesday of each designated month. The tentative schedule for 2025-26 is:
- Fall: September 17, October 15, November 19
- Spring: February 18, March 18, April 15
- Sessions will run from 8:30 AM to 10:15 AM.
- Meetings will be held on WKU’s campus or at community partner locations.
- A light breakfast (e.g., donuts) will be served at each session.
What topics will be covered in each session?
Each session focuses on a key area of civic and governmental leadership. The tentative schedule for next years is:
- September – Local Government
- October – State Government
- November – Law & Judicial System
- February – Economic Development & Tourism
- March – Education & Healthcare
- April – Federal Government
Is transportation provided?
- Students may drive themselves or carpool to sessions.
- Schools have indicated they are willing to help coordinate transportation for students who need it.
