Scholarships & Awards


The WKU Recreation Administration program awards seven scholarships (eight financial awards) annually to students in the major to honor the following individuals:

  • Charles T. Crume, Jr.
  • Fred Kirchner & Jesse W. Thornton
  • Jo Ann Verner
  • William 'Biff' Kummer
  • Alton Little
  • Pat Little
  • Betty Jean Little Levis

In addition, the program recognizes undergraduate students with an "Outstanding Undergraduate Recreation Administration Student Award."

Chuck Crume

First awarded in 1979
(50% at the beginning of Fall and Spring semester)
Requirements:

  1. The student must be a full-time undergraduate student in the Recreation Administration major at the time of the nomination and is expecting to complete two full semesters following the acceptance of the nomination. At least one of these semesters as an undergraduate student.
  2. Hold a 2.5 GPA or above.
  3. Contributed unselfishly to the well-being of the students in the Recreation Curriculum or to the community as a whole.
  4. Demonstrated a high degree of leadership aptitudes, initiative, and dedication in day-to-day dealing with faculty, students, and field professionals.

(50% at the beginning of Fall and Spring semester)

Requirements:

  1. Enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Western Kentucky University.
  2. Majoring in Recreation Administration within the School of Kinesiology, Recreation & Sport.
  3. First preference shall be given to a student interested in pursuing a career in therapeutic recreation and/or has demonstrated significant contributions through professional or volunteer service enhancing the quality of life (mental, emotional, and physical well-being) of persons with disabilities or those with a chronic or terminal illness.
  4. Demonstrate a financial need.
  5. Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  6. Possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness and human compassion which produce leaders and merit the honor of this award.

Criteria:

  1. Excellence in course work, reflected in grade point average.
  2. Exceptional projects, papers, and classroom participation.
  3. Excellence in other program requirements such as the internship.
  4. Involvement in activities such as the Recreation Major's Club and professional organizations.
  5. Participation in service activities.
  6. Potential for accomplishment in the profession.
