WKU Offers Four In-Person/Non-Credit Healthcare Courses this Fall

Bowling Green, Kentucky – WKU Continuing & Professional Development will offer four non-credit healthcare career training courses this fall for adult learners interested in beginning a career in the healthcare field. Courses will be offered in-person in either Bowling Green or Glasgow.
These courses prepare students to take industry-recognized certification exams that are nationally recognized. Individuals who qualify may be able to receive WIOA funding that is administered through the Kentucky Career Center offices. Courses may include an externship, hands-on labs, and the opportunity to take the industry certification exam on the last day of class.
CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT – Bowling Green, August 23-December 1
Students learn medical office functions including how to prepare patients for examination and treatment and conduct routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing and other clinical functions.
This course covers phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs and cardiology, as well as professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. Students will complete 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity with a local healthcare provider.
PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN – Glasgow, August 24-November 4
A 90-hour course that prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for laboratory analysis. Students become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely.
Students gain hands-on experience in blood collection and procedures, universal precautions for handling specimens, anatomy & physiology terminology, and safe and effective venipuncture skills. This course also includes an externship following successful completion of the course.
MEDICAL BILLING & CODING – Bowling Green, September 7-November 11
A course that prepares professionals for one of the fastest-growing careers in the fast-growing healthcare industry. A wide variety of healthcare providers utilize medical billing & coding professionals, including physicians, hospitals, pharmacies, physical therapy practices, long-term care facilities, and chiropractic practices
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN – Glasgow, September 21-November 9
A comprehensive 50-hour course that prepares students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting. Students learn pharmacy medical terminology, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the option to complete the externship.
These courses and a Medical Administrative Assistant course are also available in an online, on demand, self-paced format. Medical administrative assistants primarily work in doctor’s offices, clinics, outpatient settings, hospitals, and other healthcare settings.
