Local high school students from Early College at WKU in Glasgow recently had an immersive learning experience on the Hill. The students spent their morning engaging with representatives from departments within their chosen career track.
Cole Jackson from Allen County-Scottsville High School is in the Business Management Track. He and his classmates met with the WKU Assistant Vice President for Marketing & Brand Strategy John-Mark Francis and completed a marketing video challenge.
They were divided into groups and encouraged to utilize any part of campus for content to develop a recruitment video for high school students interested in college.
“This was a great hands-on experience!” said Cole. “Each of us used our unique skills to collaborate and create a thoughtful and engaging 36-second video revolving around the WKU Spirit.”
Nursing Career Track students used actual medical training equipment to practice laparoscopic surgery, suturing and stapling techniques, and intubation methods. They also learned about bleeding control principles and earned their Stop the Bleed Certification.
Education Career Track students toured the Kentucky Museum and took a closer look into the history of education in Kentucky since the 1800’s and experienced how educators used a variety of time-period writing instruments and teaching materials.
Students from the Crime & Legal Studies Career Track learned about the pathway to law school and discussed the Boston Massacre case and legal opinions surrounding it.
Agriculture Career Track students visited the WKU Farm and met with students from the Horse Science program. They learned about equine safety and worked with the horses.
The students wrapped up their campus trip with lunch, followed by a visit to the Mahurin Honors College before returning to their high schools.
“We want our early college students to gain practical knowledge and understanding of their future careers through experiences outside the classroom,” said Stephanie Prichard who coordinates Early College at WKU in Glasgow. “These field trips give our early college students practical knowledge of areas within their career path, which is vital to their overall experience.”
Early college students take two field trips each semester, so they have a total of eight in-depth experiences with academic departments and practicing professionals by the time they graduate.
In April, the students will take a field trip to businesses and organizations in Glasgow and spend time with local professionals within their Professional Career Track.
