KRS Study Away: Hawaii

In May 2023, Drs. Stacey Forsythe (SPM) and Whitley Stone (EXS) led a group of 16 students to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands of Oahu and Kona (the Big Island) to learn about sport tourism and the impacts of those activities on the body.

Sport and tourism play an integral role in the economic well-being of the state of Hawaii. The number of extremely diverse geographic, natural, and cultural resources play a significant role in the sport/travel opportunities being offered and students had the opportunity to experience many of these different aspects within one study away course. Studying away in Hawaii allowed students apply Environmental Physiology principles while they actively participated in exercising at altitude, depth, and in the heat/humidity unique to the Hawaiian Islands. There are few places on Earth that allow for exploration of physiological responses to exercise in such diverse conditions. Students hiked at altitude and in rainforest environments, snorkeled and SCUBA in the hydrodynamic ocean and compared those experiences to upper body stand-up paddling boarding and kayaking in the Pacific Ocean.

Students were immersed in an environment that provided an educational opportunity beyond what they could have experience in the classroom.
