VUB - About Our Program
Veterans Upward Bound at WKU
Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a grant-funded program designed to help U.S. military Veterans enter into and succeed in post-secondary school. All services and materials provided are completely FREE OF CHARGE for those who qualify. We are funded by a TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education (for more information about TRIO and other TRIO programs at WKU, see WKU's TRIO homepage).
Eligibility Requirements
Students seeking to benefit from our FREE educational services must first meet a few simple eligibility requirements:
- All VUB participants must: a) have at least 180 days of active service; b) be a member of a reserve component called to active duty for more than 30 days; or c) have served active duty but was discharged/released due to a service-connected disability. Additionally, all participants must have better than a dishonorable discharge.
- All VUB participants must be either low-income (based on federal income charts), potential first generation college students (neither parent earned a baccalaureate degree), or at high risk of academic failure (meaning having low test scores, having a disability, or having been out of school for over 5 years).
- All Participants must live within our service area; the following Kentucky counties: Allen, Barren, Breckinridge, Butler, Edmonson, Grayson, Hart, Hardin, Logan, Meade, Simpson, or Warren.
Counseling Services
Participants of VUB can take advantage of a variety of counseling services.
Postsecondary School Entry Advising
Staff provide advising, transcript collection services, application form completion, and much more to assist veterans apply to post-secondary school.
Academic Advising
Our staff can advise students about what classes might be good to take during their first semester in post-secondary school. Appropriate majors can also be discussed, as well as academic requirements which might be involved to earn a degree in a chosen major.
Financial Aid Advising
Financial aid advice, financial aid forms, VA Benefits scholarship resource books, and much more are all available to participants to help them design a plan to pay for post-secondary school.
Career Advising
A career interest inventory is routinely administered and Interpreted to assist veterans understand their interests related to others in various career fields. Career books are available to assist veterans research possible careers to pursue.
Academic Services
Participants of VUB can take advantage of a variety of academic services.
Online Tutoring
VUB offers free access to APEX, an online tutorial program that can be used anywhere out students have web access. Some students use the online tutorial as a supplement to their work in class, while those who can not attend our refresher classes in-person can still work on their academic skills. Speak to our counselor to see if online tutoring will work for you.
Parking
Veterans Upward Bound provides visitors and students with a temporary parking pass for use while visiting campus. These passes can be checked out through the VUB office, and they must be returned at the end of each visit.
- Park in one of the "Jones-Jaggers Hall Visitor Parking" spots around Jones-Jaggers Hall
- If you cannot find a visitor spot open, park in the 10-minute spot in front of the building, then ask a VUB staff member for a temporary parking permit.
- Put the permit on the dash of your car and park in any of the lots next to Jones-Jaggers Hall
- After your visit, please return the parking pass.
