- Application form.
- Evidence of meeting the minimum academic requirements from an ACEND-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics with a “Declaration of Intent to Complete Degree” form.
- Personal statement.
-
- Personal statement is to be less than 1000 words and communicate the potential intern’s short- and long-term goals as related to the internship, their perceived strengths and weaknesses, personal experiences that have helped prepare them to be successful in a dietetic internship, and their overall “why”.
- Three letters of recommendation.
-
- Each letter is to be in a sealed envelope with a signature across the back of the envelope or in an email directly from the person providing the letter of recommendation. The letters are to be sent to ann.embry@wku.edu
- An up-to-date resume.
The preselection packet is due to the DI director on or before November 1st at 4:30 p.m. The packet is to be handed directly to the Dietetic Internship Director or the Applied Human Sciences Office Coordinator if the DI director is not available.
Preselect Selection Process:
1. There are a total of five preselect positions annually.
2. Selection criteria will be based on academic performance, faculty recommendations,
and the selection committee’s assessment of the individual’s ability to successfully
complete the WKU DI program. Meeting minimum requirements for the preselect admission
option does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
4. Admittance into WKU’s DI program is contingent on the student maintaining a 3.0
overall GPA and 3.2 DPD GPA in all courses remaining to complete the DPD program.
5. Application reviews will be conducted by the WKU DI Selection Committee upon receipt
of final semester grades and calculation of the cumulative GPA.
6. Students are accepted into the WKU DI program for the program start date immediately
following completion of their undergraduate requirements.
7. Once a student accepts an intern position with the WKU’s DI program, the student’s
name is submitted to D&D Digital, and he/she becomes ineligible to participate in
computer matching.
Preselect Applicant Notification:
1. Applicants will receive a notification via email from the dietetic internship director
of acceptance or rejection on or before November 15th.
2. Written confirmation via email to the Dietetic Internship Director of acceptance
or rejection of the internship position is required within 24 hours of notification.
3. Students admitted into the DI program will complete the Graduate School Application
for Admission and must be accepted to WKU’s graduate school.

The Western Kentucky University Dietetic Internship is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
NOTE: Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master’s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). In most states, an RDN must also obtain licensure to practice. For information on dietetic program accreditation, refer to: http://www.eatrightPRO.org/ACEND
