HOMECOMING 2013 "BRIGHT LIGHTS, RED CITY"
The Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni will hold a brunch entitled "Bright Lights, Red City: Light the Way with Family and Consumer Sciences" on Saturday, October 26, 2013, in the FACS dining room (AC 213). A silent auction will also be held in conjunction with this event. Auction items will be located in front of the Academic Complex in the patio area. Please stop by the auction and bid on the items of your choice!
ALUMNI RAFFLE QUILT
The Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Association is raffling a beautiful vintage quilt to raise money for the two scholarship funds supported by the Association. The quilt (82" x 82") is hand cross-stitched, bordered in a rich purple, and is hand quilted.
Tickets are $2.00 each and will be on sale from now until the end of Homecoming 2013. One ticket will be drawn at the close of Homecoming and the lucky winner will be notified by phone. Tickets may be obtained from the FACS Department (AC 302F, 270-745-4352), Martha Jenkins (jenkins777@twc.com or 270-842-0686), or Romanza Johnson (RomanzaJ@twc.com or 270-842-3416), or on Homecoming Day at the FACS Alumni Silent on the patio of the Academic Complex on Campus.

NEW CERTIFICATE PROGRAM APPROVED BY WKU BOARD OF REGENTS
The WKU Board of Regents approved the Kitchen and Bath Certificate program at their July, 2013 meeting. The requirements for this certificate program are designed to give students advanced knowledge for the design of both residential and commercial kitchens and bathrooms in accordance with regulatory safety requirements, environmental standards, and business practices. The FACS department is excited about the possibilities that this new program will open up for the students, the program, and the community.
2013-2104 DIETETIC INTERNSHIP CLASS SELECTED
The WKU Dietetic Internship is beginning its second year with ten new interns, shown below. This year, six of the interns are WKU graduates. Rotation sites include Bowling Green, Glasgow, Elizabethtown, Leitchfield and Louisville. Interns are placed in hospitals, health departments, schools, long-term care facilities and cooperative extension offices in these locations.
The graduating class of 2012-2013 had a successful year with eight interns passing the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) exam.
HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT/DIETETICSTUDENTS AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLARSHIPS
Jan Claussen, a senior dietetic student from Hendersonville, TN, received from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation the 2013-2014 Dietetics in Health Care Communities Horizon Scholarship in the amount of $3,000. These foundation scholarships are very much sought after and the process if very competitive to win the award.
Dylan Gordon, a senior hotel, restaurant, and tourism management student from Crestwood, KY, received from the National Tour Association Tourism Cares program, the 2013 NTA Pat and Jim Host Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Scholarship recipients are invited to attend the Tourism Cares Menotiring Program at the annual NTA/UMA Travel Exchange in February 2014 in Los Angeles. The Tourism Cares scholarship program awards 55 academic scholarships annually to undergraduate and graduate students from across the nation.
BETA DELTA CHAPTER OF PHI UPSILON OMICRON WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION
The Beta Delta Chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society was awarded first place by national Phi Upsilon Omicron for their 2013 National Professional Project: "Building Traditions, Developing a Literary Legacy, as well as Caring, Service, and Support Legacies."
The primary objective of this project was to engage in a literacy program for underprivileged preschool children in the community that would facilitate the childrens' future success. The students partnered with The Dolly Parton Imagination Library, managed by United Way of Southern Kentucky, to fulfill their project goals.
PHI UPSILON OMICRON ALUMNI TO MEET DURING HOMECOMING
The Beta Delta Alumni Chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron will meet on Saturday, October 26. All Phi U alumni are invited to attend. Come learn how you can help with the projects for the upcoming year.
WKU INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAM SELECTED TO DISPLAY STUDENT WORK AT NEOCON
The WKU Interior Design program was one of only ten programs nationally that were selected to display student work at NeoCon on June 10-12, 2013, at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. NeoCon is North America's largest design exposition and conference for commercial interiors. Over 4,000 architecture and design professionals attended the event and were able to view the students' work.
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS PARTNER WITH CAVE CITY TOURISM GROUP
Junior Interior Design (ID) students are working on a real-life project for the Mammoth Cave Area Welcome Center in Cave City, Kentucky. Currently, the Welcome Center and the Chamber of Commerce entities are co-mingled at the site. This design project will allow the functions of the two entities to be separated and make interaction with customers and visitors easier and more effective. The ID students will be repurposing local items to retrofit the interior of the building.
The finished design project will be presented to Cave City officials in November with project implementation to begin in early 2014.
INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS COMPETE IN PRODUCT RUNWAY COMPETITION
The WKU International Interior Design Association (IIDA) student group competed in the PRODUCT RUNWAY- MAGIC CARPET RIDE competition in Lexington, Ky on October 10. The theme this year was Pinnochio and the different elements of the design, such as the mask and skirt were inspired by the characters in this story. Shaw Carpet Contract Group paid for the materials and entry fee for the ID students and even manufactured the materials used in the design just for these students.
This competition is held to inspire interior designers and architects to exhibit their creativity and technical skills by producing couture fashion constructed out of interior finish materials, such as wallcovring, carpet, paint chips, or chair parts.
FACS DEPARTMENT HEAD COMPLETES LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM
Dr. Doris Sikora, FACS Department Head, was one of 26 people from across the nation who completed the State Leadership Training Program developed and implemented by the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE). During the 18 hours of training, participants received leadership training in addition to specific instruction in association management.
This program is based on the quality association standards (QAS), which cover key aspects of association management--from finances and bylaws to programs and marketing--which allows the successful completers to apply these concepts to their own state associations.
FACS ALUMNI SUMMER MEETING NEWS
The FACS Alumni and Phi Upsilon Ommicron Alumni met at Talbott's Tavern in Bardstown, Ky. on July 11, 2013 for their summer meeting. The Outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Award was given to Mary Garnett Richey of Scottsville, Ky. and the Romanza O. Johnson Outstanding Citizenship Award was given to Margaret Scott.
OBITUARIES
- Eva Sartin Bogue (Home Economics Education) of Munfordville, Ky., died on June 30, 2013 at her home.
- Broderick C. Gatewood (Textiles and Clothing) died on July 3, 2013. Mr. Gatewood worked in retail for 20 years and was pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Olmstead, Ky, from 2005 until his death.
- Agnes Midkiff Foster Hunter (Home Economics Education,) of Hartford, Ky., died on July 16, 2013. Ms. Hunter taught at Dundee school until the school closed in 1956. Under Ms. Hunter's sponsorship, the Dundee Chapter of Future Homemakers of America (FHA) was the first chapter charted in the state, and two of her students wrote the Kentucky FHA song. Throughout her career, Ms. Hunter was an active member of the National FHA Board of Directors, the American Home Economics Association, Kentucky Home Economics Association, the American Vocational Association and the Kentucky Vocational Association.
- Ann W. Moore (Home Economics Education) of Adairville, Ky., died on June 3, 2013, at her home.
