David Mefford Memorial Scholarship Fund
Remembering David
David H. Mefford was born on August 26, 1930 in Beech Creek, Kentucky to Raymond and Dulcie Grubb Mefford. He graduated from Hughes-Kirk High School in 1947, graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1952 with a BA degree, and graduated from Southern Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky in 1956 with a Masters in Divinity degree.
He served as the full time pastor for Greenwood Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky, First Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia, and Harrisonburg Baptist Church in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He joined the staff at Western Kentucky University in 1965 and worked in the areas of school relations and scholarships. He served as a dedicated employee, loyal supporter and avid recruiter there for 25 years. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Hughes-Kirkpatrick Scholarship Funds that benefit students from his native Muhlenberg County. One of those funds bears his name.
He was married to Mae Swinney Mefford and father to Jim and Robin Mefford, Jeff and Lori Mefford, and Doug and Lisa Mefford. David’s love for his wife and family was surpassed only by his love of Christ, and his passion was that all would enter into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. In all of his full time ministry positions he made it a priority to start mission churches that continue to this day. He dedicated his life to the service of the Lord and to the service of others with humility, joy, compassion, and contagious laughter.
After a prolific life, David passed away on March 8, 2017, at the age of 86. He will be greatly missed, and this scholarship fund will live on in perpetuity to honor his legacy. Additionally, this fund demonstrates his belief in the importance of education and will help deserving students pursue their degrees.
