Dianna Gibbs Voll Scholarship Fund
Dianna Gibbs Voll passed away peacefully on November 5, 2022, at her home surrounded by the love of her family. She was 74 years old. Dianna was born in Scottsville, Kentucky, on April 12, 1948. She is survived by her husband David R. Voll, Sr. Dianna lived an exceptional life and will be deeply missed by her husband and her two beloved children David R. Voll Jr. (Martha) of Louisville, Kentucky and Staci (Erick) Wegmann of Houston, Texas; as well as her three grandchildren, Blake Allen Wegmann, Brooke Emma Wegmann, and Bennett Todd Wegmann of Houston, Texas. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ovaleta and Ernest Gibbs of Holland, Kentucky, and her brother Donald Raye Gibbs.
Dianna grew up on a farm in Allen County, Kentucky, and attended Allen County High School. She loved to sing and was blessed with a beautiful voice. In High School, she and her cousins, Barbara and Marcia, formed the Gibbs Trio and sang at social events and weddings. They once performed on the local TV station in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Again in her later years, she sang regularly with friends in a band.
Dianna earned her degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s of Education (M.Ed.) from Western Kentucky University. While attending Western Dianna met her future husband, David Voll of Louisville, Kentucky, whom she married in 1969.
She established a career spanning 36 years as an educator with Louisville/Jefferson County Schools in Louisville, Kentucky, Northside ISD in San Antonio, Texas, and Spring Branch ISD in Houston. The last 20 plus years of her career was teaching in the Gifted and Talented Programs. Her teaching legacy continues through all the students she impacted with her energetic personality.
Over Dianna and David’s 53 years of marriage they lived in Louisville, Kentucky, San Antonio, Texas, Houston, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, and then ultimately settling back in Houston. They spent their later years traveling with many great friends. Cruising was their most popular means of travel. Their first cruise was on their 25th wedding anniversary, aboard the Monarch of the Seas to the Caribbean. Over the years, they traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, France, the wine country in California many times and various destinations around the U.S. During their early child rearing years, they spent many summer vacations on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.
Dianna’s social calendar was always filled with friends and family. Her annual Kentucky Derby Party, at last count numbered 36, was an event not to miss. Dianna and David were fortunate to have an abundance of good friends who celebrated every season and events with gusto. At dinners she was the “Groups” wine Sommelier.
While Dianna was never an athlete herself, she loved cheering on her grandchildren in whatever the sport of the season was happening. She was at the ballfield every week and learned more about flag football, soccer, baseball, basketball and lacrosse than she ever thought she would. She was so proud to be their “Baba”.
Her charitable / non-profit endeavors included Be An Angel, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children with multiple disabilities or profound deafness by providing needed adaptive equipment and select services. She was also involved with her husband in Virtuosi of Houston, a youth chamber orchestra composed of musicians ages 11 to 18 in the Houston area, focused on chamber music education and performance.
“The things that matter most in our lives are not fantastic or grand. They are the moments when we touch one another, when we are there in the most attentive or caring way.” Jack Kornfield
