Remembering Nate

Nathan Phillip Jordon, fondly known as Nate, was a native of Louisville, Kentucky and a graduate of Southern High School. He was a proud Western Kentucky University alumnus and a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Nate was a resident of Bowling Green for over 20 years. Many knew him in the community for his generosity, friendship and dedication to those in need of assistance. He put others before himself. Nate worked tirelessly to support those with special needs, the homeless and young people until his sudden death in 2006 at the age of 43.

Nate provided resources for families in need and at times lodging for students. He also volunteered for Special Olympics, Bowl for Kids Sake, Habitat for Humanity, and for the Salvation Army. He delivered food to senior citizens over the holidays and collected food for food banks. He made significant contributions to WKU and the surrounding community over his 20+ years, but he may have been known most for his Sunday dinners.

Nate showed support for young people during his time as Center Manager for the WKU Campus Childcare Center at the Bowling Green Housing Authority location for approximately 10 years and as a Coordinator with the Governor’s Minority Student College Preparation Program at WKU - Project: A.I.M.S. (Activating Interest in Minority Students), a grant funded program that focused on increasing participation in higher education for Kentucky’s minority population. He served as a role model and mentor for the middle school and junior high students in this program for over 15 years.

Nate was the 2005 recipient of the President’s Diversity Award for the community. This initiative was set forth by the university to recognize and reward a Western Kentucky University student, employee, and a member of the community for contributing exemplary leadership and achievement in advancing diversity at Western Kentucky University or communities served by WKU.

Nate is survived by his mother, LoAnn Jordon; father, Jesse Hughes; and sister, Marcella Floyd. He also leaves a host of family and friends to cherish memories.

Some of Nate’s dearest friends, Jackie Lasley Pillow, Venton Curry, Tony Copeland and Tony Wilson, want his legacy to live on indefinitely through this scholarship.

He’s gone, but never forgotten!
