Remembering Rhea Lazarus
Rhea Price Lazarus, 87, of Bowling Green was born on May 2, 1931 and entered into rest on Thursday, August 16, 2018. He was the son of the late Harry Lazarus Jr. and Christine Price Lazarus. Rhea was a graduate of College High, William & Mary and Western Kentucky University. He was employed by Bowling Green City Schools as a teacher, varsity baseball coach, Junior high basketball coach and elementary school principal. He was employed at Western Kentucky University for 20 years as a teacher in the Education Department, Registrar and assistant to President Dr. Dero G. Downing. He served on the board of directors for Citizens National Bank, TransFinancial Bank, Kentucky Senior Gold Association, Bowling Green Country Club and Bowling Green City Schools. Rhea was a member of Greenwood Park Church of Christ, SAE Fraternity at William and Mary, William and Mary Alumni Association, WKU Alumni Association, the Cupola Society at WKU for 53 consecutive years, WKU W-Club, Hilltopper Athletic Foundation, and the “Other Club” Literary Club. His family included his wife Sarah Haynes Lazarus; daughters Mary Katherine Lazarus, Amy Coleman and Mary Jo McLaughlin; Four grandchildren Graham Rich, Harrison Gheens Rich, Katherine Helen Coleman and Christine Clarke Coleman, and Four great-grandchildren Griffin Price Sheffield, Burkley Sloan Felty, Collins Kate Rich and Hayes Matthew Rich. The Rhea Lazarus Scholarship Fund was established in his memory by his family and friends and demonstrates his loyalty to his alma mater and his strong belief in the importance of education.
