Dr. Burton, a native of southcentral Kentucky, began her career as a speech-language pathologist as a clinical fellow at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was also a LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) trainee in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, College of Medicine. Most of her clinical experience has been in pediatric healthcare, with a focus on serving children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders. She also has experience providing early intervention services for children under three years of age.
Her research training and experiences are related to child language, social communication, and autism spectrum disorder. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of South Carolina, where she helped coordinate research studies related to autism spectrum disorder, Fragile X syndrome, and women with FMRI premutation. Dr. Burton has established research reliability on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2).
