Flagship Student Support

Flagship Student Support for Summer Programs

How Your Student Support Will Be Determined:

The WKU Chinese Flagship Student Support Committee takes a holistic approach when evaluating applications for student support. Each application is reviewed carefully based on the following criteria, including but not limited to:

  • Your pre-summer program Chinese language test results

  • Your demonstrated commitment, maturity, and potential to successfully complete the Capstone Year

  • Your overall GPA in Chinese language courses

  • Whether you submit your application on time

  • Your financial need

Before applying, gather these documents:
  1. Scholarship Proof (Confirmation emails, award letters):
    1. Domestic Program: Proof of application to at least 2 scholarships.
    2. Overseas Program: Proof of application to at least 3 scholarships.

  2. Program Acceptance/Application: Proof of acceptance or application to a Flagship-approved summer program. (Example: Acceptance email screenshot)

  3. Unofficial Transcript: Printable from TopNet.

  4. Scholarship Essay (500 words): Explain how you'll use the program's opportunities (language pledge, homestays, community involvement, etc.) to achieve your academic goals.

  5. Estimated Budget (USD): Include all these categories, even if your program has a single fee. Contact your program for estimates if needed. Use XE.com for currency conversion.
If you are attending an overseas summer program, please visit the WKU Global Programs to find your approved program and its associated costs. If your program is not listed or you are unsure which expenses to include, please contact I-Tsai Pan at i-tsai.pan@wku.edu as soon as possible for guidance.

  6. Flagship funding is used as a last-dollar approach, meaning if your program is $5000, and you receive $2000 from other sources, Flagship funding can only be awarded up to the difference ($3000 in this example). Flagship will not award funding beyond the program budget. Additional scholarships will not only give you flexibility in travel and program choice, but also add nicely to your scholarship portfolio.

  7. Please note: While we anticipate providing adequate student support, funding is not guaranteed and is subject to change based on availability and program budgets. We will keep all applicants informed if any adjustments are necessary. Flagship students should plan accordingly and not assume that student support will automatically be awarded.

Flagship Student Support For Capstone

Starting in the summer/fall of 2025, direct funding for Capstone programs through Flagship grants will be discontinued. Instead, Capstone funding will be exclusively available through Boren-Flagship Scholarships and ROTC Flagship student support. Students not receiving Boren or ROTC support can still attend Capstone programs if they self-fund or secure other scholarships.

Service Commitment

Students receiving Flagship support for their studies (tutoring, language partners, summer funding) must be aware that Flagship programs aim to create pathways to government service. Commitment to government service will be achieved through Boren or ROTC scholarships for Capstone.

Students participating in an overseas summer program must also submit a study abroad application through WKU Global.
