Why did you choose this major?
I chose to be a finance major because I enjoy learning about managing money and how it relates to one's financial journey. Diving deeper into their financial decisions and its relationship with the industry today is something I am eager to learn about and potentially practice in my future career as a financial advisor. This major has also provided me with great resources such as the Center for Financial Success, where I am a student coach, meeting with students and guiding them through their financial decisions and goals while in college and post-graduation.
What has been your favorite course?
My favorite course I've had so far is FIN 161 with Professor Head. This course encompasses different concepts of financial literacy that are applicable throughout different stages of life, such as retirement planning, taxes, credit, and learning how to forecast investment performance.
What advice would you give to a student who is considering Finance as a major?
Make the switch! Having a major in Finance provides so many opportunities and different outlets for your future. Studying finance equips you with the knowledge to make sound financial decisions for yourself and you can also lead others to do the same.
What concentration-related skills have you used during internships or other work experiences?
Being an intern for a local wealth management this past summer, I had the opportunity to dive deeper into my personal financial planning concentration. I was shadowing established leaders in the firm and creating financial plans from scratch that were tailored to the client's goals and portfolio. This experience allowed me to work with real-life aspects of financial planning and learn directly from advisors' day-to-day tasks.
Tanner Redmon
Tanner is a Sophomore majoring in Finance, concentrated in Personal Financial Planning. He works as an Financial Coach in WKU’s Center for Financial Success where he is able to provide personalized one on one financial coaching for WKU students, helping them take steps toward financial freedom. Additionally, he is the Vice President of the WKU Student Chapter of the Financial Planning Association. Following graduation, Garrett hopes to earn his CFP® designation so that he is able to further travel alongside others, helping them realize their financial goals.
Why did you choose this major?
I debated coming into college whether to pursue an accounting degree or finance. I took courses during my first semester in both avenues, and enjoyed both classes, but felt that I was better equipped for a career in personal finance. Financial planners have a very unique role in the lives of investors, and or often one of the most trusted people in an investor's life. I like the idea of possessing the knowledge and experience to help people in a practical manner, working with clients to reach financial freedom!
What has been your favorite course?
Thus far, my favorite class has been FIN331- applied investments. This is a fun class, as it is the first introduction to the basics of investing. Dr. Rhoades brings an energy and excitement that I have never experienced before. He runs his classes in a "flipped style", which encourages interaction during the class periods with other students.
What advice would you give to a student who is considering Finance as a major?
I believe that pursuing a degree in finance opens up opportunities in MANY different fields, equips you with knowledge that is applicable to life both during college and after, and enables you to connect with an entire department of professors who have been successful in the industry, are PASSIONATE to see students succeed, and are more than knowledgeable in the profession(many of which are VERY overqualified).
What concentration-related skills have you used during internships or other work experiences?
One of the unique opportunities that are made available to Finance students is the TVA portfolio management class, where students are given a real portfolio to invest, buy, sell, and research equities. This is such a challenging opportunity to have as a student. Another unique opportunity are the day trips to numerous firms in the surrounding areas, normally spearheaded by Dr. Rhoades himself. This gives opportunities to meet personally with large firms, who often are seeking interns! However, the best opportunity that I have taken advantage of at this point is working in the Center for Financial Success, where I serve as a financial coach to students, who act as clients! This has been an incredible way to develop my knowledge of the field, communication skills, and how to meet the individual needs of others!

Why did you choose this major?
I'm truly passionate about making a positive impact on people's lives, especially when it comes to the often stressful subject of finances. My goal is to alleviate the stress surrounding money matters and provide valuable education that empowers individuals to achieve their financial objectives.
What has been your favorite course?
My favorite course has been FIN 331- Applied Investments with Dr. Rhoades.
What advice would you give to a student who is considering Finance as a major?
I highly recommend giving it a try. The knowledge I've gained in this major has proven incredibly valuable, not only in my professional journey but also in my everyday life. It has empowered me to make more informed financial decisions, bringing a sense of assurance that I'm on the right path.
What concentration-related skills have you used during internships or other work experiences?
Throughout internships and various work experiences, I've applied a spectrum of skills acquired in my investment classes, enabling me to analyze stocks and construct portfolios. Additionally, I've utilized budgeting techniques from FIN 161 to develop personalized spending plans for clients, applied car-buying insights from my insurance class, and navigated retirement planning intricacies, among other valuable skills gained in my finance concentration.
Randy Dunham

He is also a participant in WKU's Financial Management Association and heavily involved with Cru, a campus ministry. Following graduation, Randy is going on a summer mission to Japan before he starts his career!
Why did you choose this major?
I chose to pursue finance mainly because of my overall interest in investments. I also wanted to go into a field that would both challenge my thinking and serve others. Finance is a perfect blend of those two.
What has been your favorite course?
Without a doubt, it would be Dr. Chhachhi’s “Practicum in Portfolio Management” course. This was such a unique course in so many ways. There were hours upon hours that would go into research, crafting, and delivering a presentation; saying that the course helped on my presentation skills would be an understatement. This was a class that taught you how to value securities, do in-depth research, and collaborate your ideas with others. Because of the nature of the course, there was a lot of back and forth between students over stock selection but that is one of the many reasons why this class was so great. It challenged me to think beyond what was on the surface and really mold an opinion about a stock using a variety of factors. I would highly encourage anyone who has an interest in this to pursue this class and take it seriously – you are dealing with real money after all and I thought that was cool.
What advice would you give to a student who is considering Finance as a major?
Two things I want to touch on here. First, build relationships with your professors that go beyond the classroom setting. I can advocate that the finance professors at WKU really work to serve on the success of the student. It would be a waste to not make an effort to get to know them more. I have been blessed with opportunities because I took that step and I encourage others to do the same. Second, always ask questions. There is no shame in wanting to know more about how something works or asking a question to clarify something. There have been many times where I’ve had to go to office hours to get more of an explanation on something. Professors notice students that want to learn – so raise your hand in class and don’t be ashamed for asking questions.
What concentration-related skills have you used during internships or other work experiences?
Having courses that taught excel (like Financial Data Modeling) has helped me use and become more comfortable with the program. Often times just having a base understanding of what’s going on in the financial world has helped me be able to communicate and break down some of the tougher concepts to people. Understanding time value of money and how that works has also been significant as well as learning about many other finance principles. An area that I have used the most at my job, that I have grown on, is my presentation skills. Being able to speak clearly and confidently in front of a group of people has been a skill I’ve developed throughout my time here at WKU and I feel very comfortable with doing them now.

She works as an Associate Financial Counselor at WKU’s Center for Financial Success and is the President of the Financial Planning Association for the WKU chapter. In her free time, she unwinds by exploring nature, reading books in her hammock, and watching documentaries. Upon graduating in May of 2021, she looks forward to helping others improve their lives by teaching them how to achieve their goals through financial planning.
When asked the following questions Savannah answered:
Why did you choose this major?
I chose to study finance because I want to spread awareness of the important role that investing, saving, and creating a financial plan will have in helping others achieve their personal goals. I want to educate others about these various financial aspects, so that they will be equipped with the knowledge to help them manage their assets in an efficient manner. Not only do healthy financial decisions help the individual, but it improves the lives of those around them and society as a whole.
What has been your favorite course?
My favorite class, by far, has been Dr. Rhoades’ Applied Investments because he enlightened me on the idea that I should let my money work for itself through avenues of investing. I learned about diversification, factor-based investing, rebalancing, and the behavioral concepts that affect how someone makes financial decisions. If I could, I would take this course two times over.
What advice would you give to a student who is considering Finance as a major?
First and foremost, you should not only get involved in organizations, but you should also get involved in the classroom and get to know your professors very well. In addition, you should utilize my philosophy to “Sign Up and Show Up” to events whether or not you know what to expect because it will open the door to opportunities and expand your comfort zone.
What concentration-related skills have you used during your internships or other work related experience?
In the Center for Financial Success, I teach clients applicable skills as I coach them through actions steps that will help them achieve financial stability and prepare for life after college. Throughout this process, I utilize RedTail Technology to manage client relationships and YNAB software to provide my clients with a simple approach to managing their budget. I, also, develop my public speaking and interpersonal skills by informing others on various financial topics through presentations concerning budgeting, credit, loans, and the importance of managing finances.

Haley Boggess
I graduated from the WKU Finance Program in May 2015 with a degree in Financial Management and the Certificate of Financial Planning. I received my MBA from WKU in December 2018. I recently celebrated 3 years with Hancock Bank and Trust Company in Bowling Green, KY. As a Credit Analyst, I primarily analyze financial data in order to help assess the needs of commercial borrowers as well as identify and minimize loan risk for the bank.
I loved my time in the WKU Finance Program. The professors truly care for the students and the Gordon Ford College of Business worked hard to help prepare students for their careers.
Francisco E. Arcos
I was born and raised in Quito-Ecuador. I moved to the USA when I started college at WKU to pursue my finance degree. Little did I know that my original plans to go back home will change and instead of getting one degree, I graduated twice earning three degrees and was blessed to meet the love of my life, my wife, Elexia.
The summer before moving to the U.S, I had the opportunity to visit WKU’s campus and I immediately knew it was the right place to pursue my career aspirations. I met with Dr. Brown, who gave me guidance on the two pathways I could choose from, which lead me to pursue the Financial Management career path. Since day one, I received tremendous support from all the Faculty and Staff in the Finance department and the Gordon Ford College of Business. I also had the opportunity to be involved in many organizations, committees, and clubs. Just to mention a few, I was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Beta Gamma Sigma, I served as president of the Financial Management Association, and participated in numerous committees such as the GFCB Diversity Committee, Fiscal Oversight Committee, and the Strategic Planing Council. Involvement in these organizations and others was key to my success at WKU and allowed me to meet wonderful individuals that shared their knowledge and friendship with me.
Thanks to all of the support from WKU, I decided to declare a second major in Marketing and eventually decided to stay an extra year at WKU to obtain my MBA. My time at WKU was wonderful. I graduated in 2016 with Summa Cum Laude honors and obtained both my Finance and Marketing degrees, and the year afterwards I obtained my MBA. WKU truly felt like a second home. It’s not only the university where I obtained a universal education, but was lucky enough to meet wonderful people that I can now call family.
After completing my academic career at WKU, I was blessed to receive and offer from Edward Jones to join their firm’s Financial Advisor Career Development program. This new position had me relocate to St. Louis where I learned all about their culture and developed a comprehensive knowledge about the financial industry. Last summer, I had the opportunity to transition to a new department within the firm and I currently work as an Investment Specialist for their Financial Solutions Department. The Finance Department definitely provided me with the right tools to succeed in my career and I am thankful for having the opportunity to be a part of this amazing department during my college career.
Logan Boggess
I graduated from WKU in December 2013 with a bachelors degree in Financial Management. After graduation, I worked as a Loan Officer at a community bank for about four years. Currently, I am a Financial Institutions Examiner for the State of Kentucky.
Douglas C. Stratton

Currently, I have focused my curriculum of business/transactional work in the pursuit of a career in Estate Planning, Business Law, or potential commission in the Armed Forces.
The WKU Finance department presented me with unique experiences and academic challenges that influenced my decision to pursue law school. I still rely on my work ethic that I formed at WKU and truly believe the professors and staff are second to none. The biggest advice I can give to current students is to connect with your professors & classmates and be involved on campus. The friends you make now will be your connections later in life, and you will never regret making the time to spend with them.
