Folk Studies to Host Oral History Meet-up on November 17

Folk Studies to Host Oral History Meet-up on November 17

With funding support from the Oral History Association (OHA), the Western Kentucky University Department of Folk Studies & Anthropology and the Kentucky Folklife Program will host a meet-up for oral historians in Southcentral and West Kentucky on November 17 to socialize and discuss topics such as projects, funding, archiving, the impact of COVID-19, and new technologies. People with all levels of interest in and experience with oral history are welcome to attend, and OHA membership is not required. Students in this fall’s Oral History course (FLK 430/566) will also be participating and assisting in hosting this event.

The meet-up will take place from noon-2:00 p.m. CST on Friday, November 17, 2023, at the Kentucky Museum on the WKU campus. The meet-up is free and open to the public and will include a light lunch. Please RSVP online by November 5 in order to attend.

Participants are invited to come early to explore the Kentucky Museum, which is free to the public. Following the meet-up, participants are invited to join a guided tour of the African American Museum of Bowling Green from 2:30-3:30 (donations encouraged).

This event is part of a statewide networking effort for oral historians to explore mutual support and collaboration, and it follows on successful oral history meet-ups in Central and East Kentucky.  The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History, Appalachia-Science in the Public Interest (ASPI), and the Southeast Kentucky African-American Museum & Cultural Center (SEKYAAMCC) co-organized previous meet-ups in 2022 and 2023 with OHA funding.
